SOUNS Puerto Rico

November 1st, 2017

The Cause

Our Souns Project is an international project that has been implemented in Africa, the United States and the Caribbean.
Through the Souns early literacy program, early childhood educators and parents acquire tools to help children build early literacy skill by introducing a concrete letter in association with its most common sound in the child’s language. The child first learns the individual letter sounds, then how to build words by listening to spoken sounds, and finally to read words by sounding out the letters.

The Schedule

Early departure by bus on Friday, November 2, to participate at the grant project site in Dorado, Puerto Rico.

Friday evening: dinner together in Old San Juan

Saturday, November 3: meet at the ferry to cross the lagoon and Uber our way to the RD7000

Family Day celebration at the Isla de Cabras en Catano from 9 AM to 5 PM. There will be music, beach games, and local food. Puerto Ricans know how to have a great time!

Additional option for the day: the Bacardi Rum distillery is convenient to the ferry landing, as well. It is a very worthwhile tour of the largest Bacardi distillery in the world (so I have been told).

Sunday, November 4: departure for those who must, or a day of exploration in Old San Juan for those who want a true walking adventure which can range from Castillo San Felipe del Morro, a magnificent historical landmark, to artisan shops and restaurants.

For those who can stay longer:

Monday, November 5: a visit to a different project site in the morning, free ranging in the afternoon. Dinner together would be good.

Tuesday, November 6: Rotary Club of San Juan luncheon meeting and Rotary Club of Rio Piedras dinner meeting.
