The Daisy Foundation
Apr. 29, 2021 12:00 p.m.
In late 1999, at the age of 33, Patrick Barnes awoke with some blood blisters in his mouth. Having survived Hodgkins Disease twice, he was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with the auto-immune disease, ITP (Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura). Pat and his wife, Tena, had just had their first child two months before he became sick. After his death, his family wanted to do something in Patrick's memory and knew that first and foremost, they wanted to say Thank You for the gifts nurses give their patients and families every day, just as they had experienced. Tena came up with the acronym, DAISY, standing for Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem and the family filed papers to become a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization. |

What is a Law of Life?A Law of Life is a short, pithy saying or quotation that points to a core personal value or ideal. Oftentimes, a Law of Life serves as a memorable and meaningful moral compass on a person’s journey through life. The Georgia Laws of Life Essay Contest asks students to select their own Law of Life, and to write about how it applies to their lives. In doing so, students reflect deeply and write from the heart about what they think matters most. The contest celebrates the students’ stories and their often profound reflections, and proudly presents significant cash awards to students and teachers. |

Sep. 11, 2021 7:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.
It is difficult to pick up a newspaper today without reading another story about the long-term implications of the growing childhood obesity problems. Peachtree City and Fayette County are not immune from this problem. Recognizing this issue, two active local organizations decided to take a positive step toward at least helping to resolve the problem in our area. The Rotary Elementary School Grand Prix series of races began in the spring of 2005 with 5 races scheduled in a preliminary shakedown series. The first full Grand Prix series season was the 2005-2006 school year. Over the many years of the series, we have raised over $1.5M for our local Fayette County Elementary schools and the series of races has become one more campaign in the fight against childhood obesity. To register to participate as a volunteer at the race, please click the buttons to the left. To register to participate in the race, please visit Active.com.

Leap for Literacy
Sep. 16, 2021 12:00 p.m.
Stan founded Leap for Literacy after firsthand experience with the extraordinary lack of access to printed materials in at-risk communities! In fact, in a research study conducted with at-risk youth, researchers measured risk factors in relation to reading proficiency by the eighth grade and determined that 37% of students with one risk factor scored at a basic reading level. When you increased to two risk factors the percent of students reading on a basic level in 8th grade jumped to 42% (Green, 1995)! Stan started gathering free texts to share with students to help boost their at-home libraries and potentially boost reading levels! He adopted acts of kindness as currency to give students the opportunity to choose free books from his exciting Read'nRoll truck! Students can also participate in several other literacy based initiatives through his school partnerships. |
